TR 14: 5 Days Trekking + Camping + Homestay in the Nam Ha Conservation Area
This program is a long trip for trekkers who love natural and cultural attractions in the national protected area. It is an impressive trail that allows you to release your stress from work, discover new experiences in the jungle, and visit ethnic villages to learn their hidden story in the remote area. In addition, you will also touch a refreshing atmosphere through evergreen and secondary forests in the Nam Ha NPA.
Day 1: A full-day trek to Lahu Ethnic Village (5-6 Hours)
On your first day is a moderate hiking in the forests. We start riding a Tuk-Tuk from 9:00 AM to the trekking route. When arriving there, we begin trekking from Ban Prang village to the Lahu village. Before getting to the jungle the team will walk through cultivated areas and deciduous forests. We will take about 2 hours to the mountain to see the beautiful landscape of the mountain, and then stop for lunch. After finishing lunch the group continues to trek toward Lahu village. When arriving there, check in at a homestay and then real and take a bath. After that, the tour guide will bring you to cook your dinner with the host family. Then all have a nice dinner and chat with each other.
Day 2: Camping in the deep jungle
The second day is an interesting trip to learn about nature, how to make a camp for overnight, and cook Lao traditional food in the jungle with bamboo pipes. After breakfast, start to trek to the campsite. During the trip, we will walk uphill to the top of a mountain and step downhill to the camp area. When reaching there, the guide will help you to find the wood to make a fire for cooking and making yourself warm at night. Then, enjoy your food in the jungle by listening to the sounds of insects and the songs of birds. Hence, go to the camp and sleep on your sleeping back.
Day 3: Hike to Khmu Ethnic Homestay – Nalan
After breakfast, depart from the camp to Nalan village “The ASEAN Tourism Standard on Community-based Tourism”. On the trip, you will walk through streams, valleys, and evergreen forests – there are opportunities to hear the songs of birds, see wildlife footprints, and traditional medicine (Herbal plants). The team will take a few hours to reach the lunch site, your tour guide will help you to prepare and cook Lao food for a picnic lunch. After lunch, continue walking until arriving at Nalan village (Khmu tribe). When arriving there, check in at a homestay and take a bath (you can either take a bath on the Nam Ha River or Bathroom in the homestay).
Day 4: Nalan trail to Lanten Ethnic Village – Namkoy
Have breakfast and take a bamboo cup of coffee, then move the destination to cross streams and walk through the tea garden before getting into the jungle again. Next, the guide will let you walk through villagers’ cultivated areas. When you reach a viewpoint, you will see a beautiful landscape of a valley. Then, walk continuously to the lunch site, your tour guide will prepare and cook Lao food for you. After lunch, trek through the heart of the jungle to see nature, wildlife footprint, traditional medicine (herbal plants), and edible plants – this will be explained by tour guides. When arriving at Namkoy village, you will see the primitive life of Lanten tribe who live in the middle of Nam Ha NPA, they still keep their unique culture particularly the style of house, clothing, and language. In addition, you have an opportunity to see bamboo paper making, indigo cotton dyeing, and handmade handicrafts (embroidery products) – this you can buy for souvenirs. Before dinner, the certificated tour guide will recommend about place to take a bath and where to stay. Your tour guide will help you cook dinner and explain Lanten culture to you.
Day 5: Trek to Nam Lue village (6 hours)
After breakfast, the team follows the Nam Ha River to Nahome village and through the open cultivated areas of the Khmu and Lanten minority groups. Lanten is a minority group who still wears traditional clothes, makes their textile, and does natural color clothes dyeing and bamboo paper makers (according to the season). After lunch and visiting the village, we gradually trek on a steep hill in the jungle which is more challenging, but it is also more and more beautiful forest, landscape, and canopy. The final descent takes the group past upland cultivated areas tended by the people of Namlue village. The trail steepens here and can be slippery after rainfall. And that is where we end our trek and return to Luang Namtha in the afternoon by Tuk Tuk.
What to prepare on the trip:
- Good hydration is a basic safety measure; make sure that you consume at least 2-3 liters of water per day. For your first day, the tour operator will provide around 2 water bottles. Please, keep always the empty bottle so you can refill the next day
- A good pair of shoes for walking
- A hat or cap
- Sunglasses
- Mosquito repellent/Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
- Toilet paper
- Raincoat (in rainy season, June-Sep)
- Pocket money etc.
- Please wear appropriate suits during the trek

- Help keep the trails clean by not littering.
- Purchasing handicrafts is highly appreciated but do not purchase antiques.
- Do not remove any archeological remains from the site of the ancient temples.
